1974 Phippen Museum Western Art Show and Sale

Quick Draw

by Don Polland

The Phippen Museum Western Art Show and Sale has been a annual tradition of the Memorial Day Weekend in Prescott, Arizona since 1974. It is held at the downtown square in Prescott and is still ongoing. The Phippen Museum believes the true spirit of the American West is preserved in its art. This show brings together artists of the highest caliber, art enthusiasts and collectors from all over the country to celebrate Prescott’s rich western heritage and culture. Don Polland was instrumental in forming the Phippen Foundation.

A perennial crowd favorite at the Phippen Museum Western Art Show and Sale is the Quick Draw that is held on Saturday and Sunday beginning at 2 p.m. The Quick Draw challenges 18–20 invited artists to create a work of art in 60 minutes. Once completed, the artworks are auctioned off.

The following is the Quick Draw that Don Polland did at the first Phippen Museum Western Art Show and Sale in 1974. According to Charolette Polland, she didn't think that Don had a specific cabin in mind when he did this drawing but rather it just just flowed from his creative mind. Charolette said Don really enjoyed getting together with the other artists and sharing ideas with them. He also enjoyed the seminars which he gave to his collectors and visiting with collectors at his many art shows.
